MovieQuick Case Study

Custom E-Commerce and Inventory Solutions, Web Design, Brand Identity, Logo Design

Background

MovieQuick.comMovieQuick.com is an online movie retailer offering its customers DVD rentals and snacks via traditional "snail mail," a similar business model to that of Netflix. Before DAL designed and developed their e-commerce solution, Moviequick.com ran its operation using a Yahoo online store. The company wanted a solution that would free them from the high cost of operating the Yahoo store, as well as have better control of the way the applications interfaced with the accounting, monitoring, and managing of their inventory.

The Challenge

Moviequick.com's owners once worked as managers in the technology/networking business, and as a result were familiar with the concept of certain technologies becoming obsolete and having a short shelf life. Moviequick.com was the owners' first venture into e-commerce and they knew from their technology experience that they wanted a site that could expand, provide a safe secure shopping environment, and had an attractive appeal with a brand image that would appeal to the masses. They also insisted the applications not be limited and that they not be developed or hosted with any sort of proprietary technologies. Moviequick.com's owners wanted to make certain should they ever bring the management of the site and its applications in house; that they would have a site that would be easy to manage and expand. Most importantly, they wanted assurance that their design and technology investments were protected.

DAL developed Moviequick.com's applications using open source technologies Java, PHP, and HTML. The database integrates seamlessly with the MYSQL server database, while the site is hosted on a dedicated Dell server running Linux.
